Background

Originally, the field was discovered in 1987, and production began in 1993. Gryphon oil production peaked in 1994. It has produced 137.5 Mmbbl of oil and 123 bcf (21.2 Mmboe) since 1993, 99.31% of its total recoverable reserves.

Gas redevelopment project

The redevelopment focuses on extracting gas from the mature oil field. Since at least 2013, Maersk Oil has proposed exploiting the field's gas resources. Maersk Oil, TAQA and other partners issued a statement in 2017 expressing interest in developing mature oil fields to exploit “a significant gas cap”  in the Quad 9 area. The gas cap straddles the Harding, Morrone, Gryphon, South Gryphon and Tullich fields.

Production at the gas field was expected to commence once the remaining recoverable oil has been produced from the area, which will be in 2025 according to Offshore Technology, although no clear FID or start date has been reported.

Ownership

As of 2022, TotalEnergies E&P North Sea UK Limited operates the field and holds 86.5% equity in the P103 and P496 licenses. Sojitz Vitality Improvement holds the remaining 13.5%.
