Background
The De Wittekrans coal mine (now known as the Gugulethu coal mine) is a proposed surface and underground mine, to be operated by Canyon Coal, producing 3.6 million tonnes per annum, near Hendrina, Mpumalanga province, South Africa.[4] As of 2020, environmental authorization for the project has been granted. A water-use license for the opencast operations is currently in progress.[4]
In December 2021, the mine was renamed from "De Wittekrans" to "Gugulethu" ahead of the start of construction. The new name means “our value” or “our pride” in Nguni languages. According to the project head, Gerhard Cronje, the purpose of the name change was to better reflect the project’s African heritage, as well as the value and pride that the project holds as a future flagship project.[5]
Subject to market conditions and the availability of export trains, construction of the Gugulethu colliery was planned to start in the first quarter of 2022. As of September 2022, construction still hadn't started, but was still planned to kick off in 2022.[6] The construction of the new mine will take about eight to ten months.[5]
