Background
In May 2022, Guinea announced the construction of a new US$300 million phased Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) provision and distribution network which includes a full-service LNG receiving terminal, a liquefaction plant and an export terminal. The facility is part of a plan to stimulate Guinea's mining sector. The project was initially conceived through a 2019 feasibility study funded by the US Trade and Development Agency.
In August 2022, West Africa LNG Group (WALNG) announced that it had closed on an equity finance round with a U.S.-based investor group. WALNG did not disclose the identity of the investor.[2]
In April 2024, Guinea's transition administration approved an agreement the government had signed last year with WALNG, paving the way for the gas project to proceed once it has been endorsed by the transition president. The project is estimated to have a total cost of US$3 billion, including a 1,800-megawatt gas-fired plant to power proposed alumina refineries.[3]
