Gwangyang Port is in South Jeolla Province, South Korea.
The Port of Gwangyang handles coal, as well as petrochemical products, fertilizers, iron ore, and steel products.[1]
Location
Gwangyang Port is in South Jeolla Province, South Korea.
Background
Gwangyang city is the home of the POSCO Gwangyang steel plant, the largest steel plant in the world. The port imports coal, ore, and limestone to feed the steelworks.[2]
Russian coal shipments have been brought into the port from Rason Port in North Korea.[3]
In 2015, the Gwangyang Port handled 25.5 million tons of coal.[4]
Yeosu Region
The Port's Yeosu area includes three terminals specialized in coal handling:[5]
- Yeosu power station coal port (listed as private-owned): 2.2 million tons of coal capacity per year
- Honam power station coal port (listed as state-owned): 3.6 million tons of coal capacity per year
- Nakpo coal port (listed as state-owned; may be associated with Kumho Terminal Operation, a subsidiary of Kumho Petrochemical Co.[6], which operates the Kumho Yeosu CHP power station): 5.2 and 0.8 million tons of coal and ore capacity per year
Gwangyang Region
The Port's Gwangyang area also includes at least one other terminal specialized in coal handling:
- Raw material and CTS terminal (listed as state-owned): 50.7 million tons of coal and iron ore capacity per year (materials for steel making)[7]
POSCO Terminal’s Gwangyang CTS port handled 8 million tons of cargo in 2015. Given that 95.6% of the cargo handled at POSCO Terminal's two ports was coal in 2016, the majority of the capacity can be assumed to be coal.[8] POSCO's clients include the following entities:
- Cogeneration Plant companies: Hanhwa Energy, Gunjang Energy, GS E&R, Boim Energy, Gimcheon Energy, etc.
- Thermoelectric Plant companies: Korea East-West Power, Korea South-East Power, Korea Midland Power, etc.
- Concrete Producing Companies: Hanil Cement, Sungshin Cement, etc.[8]
Note: A related website provides slightly different capacity numbers for the terminals in both regions.[9]
