Background
In 2019, Jinan Corporation announced plans to build a coal-fired power station to serve one of its chrome smelters in Gweru. Excess power would reportedly be supplied to Zimbabwe's national grid.[3] The capacity of the power station was not announced at the time.
In December 2023, it was reported that Jinan-Almid (Pvt) Ltd. was planning to build a 720 MW power station in Gweru. The power station was expected to begin power generation in April 2024.[4][5] It was unclear whether the Gweru power station was one of the unnamed independent power producer (IPP) coal plants referenced in November 2023 reporting.[6][7]
According to reporting from December 2024, a company called Titan New Energy was planning to build a 200 MW solar plant to power Jinan-Almid’s chrome operations in Gweru.[8] In February 2025, reporting indicated that the JinAn Group planned to set up solar plants with an initial capacity of 50 MW for its ferrochrome facility in Gweru.[9]
As of March 2025, there were no apparent updates related to the proposed 720 MW coal-fired power plant in Gweru.
