Background

In 2023, Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) awarded $16.94 billion worth of contracts for the ultra sour Hail and Ghasha project, plus an additional $8.2 billion in engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC). The project is stated to be a net zero CO2 project with expected gas production to start in 2025, producing more than 1.5 billion cubic feet per day by the year 2030.[12] It is also expected to produce over 120,000 barrel of oil and condensate per day.

In 2024, ADNOC announced it would double carbon capture to 10 million tonnes per year by 2030. Captured CO2 will be stored underground while low carbon hydrogen will be produced to replace fuel gas. Burning the produced gas is estimated to emit more than 20 times the amount of CO2 than is captured.[13] The project is estimated to produce a cumulative 618 million tons of CO2 emissions.[14]

In 2018, the Ghasha Concession was granted for 40 years.[15]

The Ghasha field is within the Marawah Marine Biosphere Reserve, recognized by the UNESCO in 2007.[16]
