Project-level coal details

  • Permit(s):

Background

The four existing coal-fired units of Haimen power station, totaling 4,144 MW, were brought online between 2009 and 2013. [2] The plant is owned by China Huaneng.[3]

The MEPC rejected units 3 & 4 's EIA approval in November 2011, noting the power station was operating before receiving its EIA clearance and had insufficient environmental controls. [4] The units received NDRC permit for construction in April 2013. That same month, it began operating. [5][6]

The power station was originally proposed as 6 x 1,000 MW. The first four units were completed by 2013 and the primary feasibility study for the last two units was completed in 2013. Due to policy changes, units 5 & 6 were presumed cancelled. The listed parent company, Huaneng Power International, decided to pursue "accrual total amount reduced-value allowance" (Google translate), meaning they appeared to give up on the expansion project.[7]

However, on August 31, 2022, the cancelled project was permitted.[8]
