Background
Hamnam Coal Mining Complex (함남지구탄광연합기업소) consists of several surface and underground mines in South Hamgyong Province, North Korea. The Sudong and Gowon districts in the southern part of South Hamgyong Province are large-scale coal mines with abundant anthracite reserves.[3]
The complex includes Gowon Coal Mine, December 16 Coal Mine, Ungok Coal Mine, Munpil Coal Mine, Sudong Coal Mine, Gyeongdun Coal Mine, Dunjeon Coal Mine, and Seongnae Coal Mine.[3][4]
According to USGS Minerals Yearbook 2017-2018, joint capacity of the complex is 2.5 million tonnes.[5]
