Harliwich Mine was an opencast lignite mine located near Roxburgh in the Central Otago region of South Island, New Zealand, and owned by Harliwich Holdings.[1]
The mine, which was the only coal mine in the Central Otago region, closed in 2018.[2]

Background
The Harliwich open cut coal mine was located near the town of Roxburgh in Central Otago Region on the South Island of New Zealand. It had operated on its Coal Creek, Roxburgh site since 1906, the single excavation pit now covering about 2 hectares.[2] It is owned by the Harliwich Carrying Company, a family company, formed in 1914.[3]
In 2007, the company began trialing production of humate for use as a soil enhancer by crushing it to super-fine particles in a plant producing up to two tonnes per day. Known as “Harlies Humates,” this product was BioGro certified for organic use.[4]
Closure
On several occasions, the Harliwich mine was accused of ground instability in the local area. In 2013, the Otago Daily Times reported that six houses near the coal mine were moving at a rate of about 15 centimeters a year.[2] Mining operations were even thought to cause sections of the adjacent Coal Creek Road to slump into the mine's pit.[2] Then in late-2017, after finding that the mine appeared to be operating on unapproved areas of land (these boundary changes could have been due to the weak soils the mine itself was causing), the Central Otago District Council ordered mining to stop indefinitely.[2]
