Background
Heinola power station was commissioned in 1984 by Stora Enso Oyj.[1]
In 2019, Finland approved a ban on coal for energy use starting in 2029.[2] This could be the proposed retirement date for the plant.
As of Q3 2023, coal reportedly only represented 5% of Stora Enso's total fuel consumption. The company was burning majority biomass.[3]
