Background
The Hendrina coal project is a proposed underground coal mine south of the town of Hendrina in Mpumalanga, South Africa.
As there have been no public updates on the project in the past two years, it is considered shelved. The Hendrina coal mine was first proposed in 2016 by Umcebo Mining (Pty) Ltd, a subsidiary of Glencore Operations South Africa (Pty) Ltd.[4]
The mining right application covers three discrete blocks of ground named Mooivley East, Mooivley West and Bosmanskrans. The area includes the national road N11 which connects Hendrina and Ermelo.[5]
As of December 31, 2019, the Hendrina Project was at an advanced exploration stage. A mining right application was accepted by the Department of Mineral Resources in June 2016, however, the application remains pending.[5] As there have been no public updates to the mine plan since it was announced in 2016, it is considered shelved. That said, the project's assets still remain listed on Glencore's 2021 resources and reserves report.[6]
