Background
The Heroes of Space Coal Mine (Heroyiv Kosmosu in Ukrainian) is an underground coal mine in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, Ukraine.
It is operated by DTEK Pavlogradugol, a subsidiary of DTEK Group, which is owned by Ukrainian billionaire Rinat Akhmetov.[5][6]
In 2020 and 2021, the coal mines of Pavlodgradugol produced a total of 6 million tonnes of coal.[7][8]
Two methane explosions occurred at the mine in 2019 and 2020.[9][10] In 2019, three miners were severely injured. [9]
Pavlograd is considered the center of Western Donbass and coal mines are located around the city. Located 80km from the Donetsk region, the city periodically suffers from Russian shelling. Due to the Russian invasion, many people left Pavlograd, including mine workers, and about 3,600 miners were mobilized into the Defense Forces. Coal enterprises faced a personnel crisis and now many women are employed in the mines in Pavlograd.[11]
As of January 2024, the mine appeared to be operating.
As of June 2024, most of the mines were planned to be shut down, but Heroes of Space and two other mines would continue operating.[12] As of early 2025, the mine appeared to be operating.
