Background on Mine
Hindusthan Lalpeth Opencast Coal Mine is located in Lalpeth Geological Block. On the North of Project, Chandrapur Town is situated and to its south Nandgaon Incline Underground mine is situated. On its west is the Manna Incline Underground mine & Erai river and to its East is Hindusthan Lalpeth colliery No. 1 underground mine.
The Environment Clearance for expansion in production capacity from 0.59 MTPA to 1 MTPA was accorded by MoEF on 14th July 2006. [1].
Spatial analysis on impacts of mining activities leading to flood disaster in the Erai watershed, India The present study utilizes satellite data of Landsat TM (1989), IRS LISS‐3 (1999, 2007) and CARTOSAT (2007) to study the extent of surface mines and management of mine over burden (OB) dumps of Hindustan Lalpeth coal mines, Chandrapur, India. Erai River originates at about 70 km north of Chandrapur city and is a part of the Wardha River Basin. On this river a dam was constructed in the year 1981, creating a large reservoir, which is the main source of water supply to Chandrapur city and Chandrapur Thermal Power Station, the largest thermal power generation plant in Maharashtra state. The major coal mines in this watershed are Hindusthan Lalpeth, Durgapur, Padmapur and Bhatadi coal mines. In this study, emphasis has been given to the Hindusthan Lalpeth coal mine area, where flood‐prone areas prevail due to coal mining and OB dumps on both sides of this river, blocking the natural course of river water flow. Figure 1 shows the location of the study area in Chandrapur district. The Erai River flows from North to South and is surrounded by a very gentle slope; the elevation ranges from 170 to 190 m above MSL. Figure 3 shows the standard False Color Composite (FCC) of Landsat TM of November 1989, IRS LISS‐3 of November 1999 and IRS LISS‐3 of November 2007. The FCC shows the coal mines and Chandrapur city, with the adjoining forest cover in red colour. Zoomed views of the study area within the yellow frame encircled below the respective images highlight the temporal changes due to coal mining in Hindusthan Lalpeth coal mines (Figure 3). [2].
Mine blast kills two, injures three at Lalpeth Greed of excavating more and more coal resulted in ghastly accident in Hindustan Lalpeth Opencast Mine (HLOC) which claimed lives of a miner and a mine manager, and left three other miners seriously injured on Sunday morning. Victim includes mine manager AK Verma and Shovel operator Rajkumar Bajpayee. [3].
