Background

In April 2020, Norwegian company Hoegh LNG announced that it had submitted a proposal for the installation of a Floating Storage Regasification Unit (FRSU) in Cyprus. The proposal is distinct from the proposed Klaipeda LNG Terminal, which is a floating import terminal also owned by Hoegh LNG, but chartered by Klaipedos Nafta. This new proposal involved the installation of an FSRU at Vasiliko within the first quarter of 2021 and a pipeline to transport the gas to the EAC’s power plant and potentially other users. The company specified that the plan would not interfere with other government plans, nor would the proposal involve any state aid or investment, though the company is open to working with the Natural Gas Public Company (DEFA).[1]

By January 2021, it appeared that the proposal had been scrapped in light of the Greek and Chinese-funded Cyprus LNG Terminal moving forward.[2]
