Background

Huguenot coal mine is a proposed surface and underground mine near Quintette, British Columbia, Canada.[3]

As of November 2023, there have been no recent updates on this project and it appears to be shelved. According to the company website, "The Huguenot Coal Project covers a total area of 7,592 ha and consists of one contiguous block of 13 coal licenses and two coal license applications that encompass previously explored deposits. The property is located approximately 140 road-km from the Quintette load-out and is amenable to open-pit mining."[3]

The project originally included an underground mine, producing approximately 1.8 million tonnes per annum, and a surface mine producing 3.2 million tonnes.[4]

In November 2019, the company's most recent study examined the prospect of an opencast only mine, with an average production of 2.7 million tonnes per annum, suggesting the underground project is shelved and capacity reduced.[5]

While there have been no recent updates on this project, reports from the fiscal year ending July 31, 2022, reveal that coal license renewal fees were paid, suggesting that the mine project is still active.[6]
