Background
The Hwa Ya Power Corporation is an affiliate of the Formosa Plastics Group[1] and commissioned the two-unit, 300 MW coal-fired power station in 2004 with various pollution controls.[2]
The plant appears to supply heat and power to the company's chemical facility and nearby factories, and to other nearby companies. Certain sources reference capacities smaller than 300 MW.[3][4]
In 2011, the company had to pay over 609 million RMB in fines for air pollution. An investigation was underway to determine if fraud in reporting emission levels occurred.[5]
The Hwa Ya group also invested another 1.5 billion RMB to build another steam plant near this one.[6]
In June 2022, it was reported that the power station had reduced its production by 78% due to rising international fuel prices, and had to purchase electricity from Taipower, the state-owned electric power provider.[7]
