Background
The Impumelelo coal mine, formerly known as the Brandspruit mine, is an underground mine operated by Sasol Mining in Embalenhle, Mpumalanga, South Africa.[7]
The mine is a part of Sasol's Secunda Mining Complex. Located about 50km outside of Secunda, the Impumelelo mine is the most geographically remote of Sasol's Secunda operations.[8]
The 21,000-hectare mine was announced in the late-2000s as part of a years-long mine replacement project that would ensure Sasol wouldn't have to source coal from elsewhere once three of its key mines came to the end of their lifespan. And once construction was complete, Impumelelo replaced Sasol's long-serving Brandspruit mine.[9][10]
Although Impumelo was designed for a production capacity of 10.5 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa), as of September 2022, Sasol's website cites a nominated capacity of 6.6 Mtpa.[8] The mine is intended to operate through the year 2050.[7]
