Background
The IMpunzi mine complex is a cluster of coal mines, operated by Glencore. It produces 6.7 million tonnes per annum, on average, in Kriel, Emalahleni, Mpumalanga, South Africa.[8]
Its mines include the Arthur Taylor colliery (ATC), Arthur Taylor Opencast Mine (ATCOM), and Phoenix. The IMpunzi complex is a large export thermal coal mining operation located 110 kilometers east of Johannesburg.[9] Its mining right includes the IMpunzi North and iMpunzi East areas.[10] (IMpunzi North consists of the North, Phoenix, and Office pits.) While all coal is currently extracted through opencast mining methods, some pit seams were previously partially extracted by underground mining.[10]
Although IMpunzi's mining right doesn't expire until March 2040, coal reserves for the complex are only sufficient to operate through the year 2031.[10]
