It was reported in October 2013 that India's Oil and Natural Gas Corp (ONGC) and Oil India Ltd was set to tap the expertise of foreign firms to search for shale oil and gas in the country. India is the world's fourth-biggest energy consumer and in October 2013 approved rules for drilling for natural gas with the process known as fracking.
It was reported that ONGC will be taking technical help from Houston-based ConocoPhillips for shale drilling. ONGC also plans to take up exploratory work" in 10 wells in blocks spread across western Cambay and eastern Cauvery and Krishna Godavari basins". The company hopes to commence commercial drilling in 2014.[1] It's been noted that one hurdle in India's effort to tap natural gas resources is the country's lack of water resources, as fracking is a water intensive activity.[2]
