Background
The government decision on the complex construction of the Iriklinskaya GRES was made on June 8, 1962. In November 1970, the first unit with a capacity of 300 MW was put into operation. In December of the same year, the second power unit was launched. After commissioning of the remaining four power units in 1971-1974 the first stage of the GRES with a capacity of 1800 MW was put into permanent operation in 1975. In December 1978, power unit No. 7 was put into operation, and on November 17, 1979, with the launch of the eighth power unit, the expansion of the GRES was completed.[20]
Iriklinskaya GRES is the most powerful power plant in the South Urals. The structure of the plant includes 26 divisions, including 8 power units with a total capacity of 2,452.5 MW (including a hydroelectric power plant with a capacity of 22.5 MW). Seven power units have a capacity of 300 MW each, one of the units (station No. 2) increased its capacity to 330 MW after modernization.[20]
Under the modernization program, unit 4 is to be replaced in 2023 with a 330 MW unit (4R).[21] Units 1 and 3 with the same type of the steam turbine are also in the modernization program: unit 1 is to be upgraded in 2027 to 330 MW and unit 3 is to be upgraded in 2026 to 330 MW.[22] As of November 2022, it is unclear whether units 1 and 3 are to be replaced similar to unit 4, or simply upgraded without a turbine replacement.
According to the document "Schemes and Programs for Development of Power Systems of Russia for 2023-2028" issued by the Ministry of Energy in February 2023, units 1 and 3 will be upgraded in 2027 and 2026, accordingly, and Unit 4 will be replaced in 2024.[23][24] In March 2023, it was reported, the replacement of Unit 4 had begun and was expected to completed by March 2024. Units 1 and 3 will be upgraded as well.[25][26] All equipment for the modernization was manufactured in Russia: by the Leningrad Metal Plant and the Electrosila Plant (both part of JSC "Power Machines").[25][27]
Unit 4R was launched in March 2024, modernization of units 1 and 3 is ongoing.[28][29]
