Background

The Isogo power station is owned and operated by J-POWER, the trading name for the Electric Power Development Co. It comprises two 600MW units: the New No 1 was commissioned in March 2002,[1] and New No 2 commissioned in 2009. Coal is imported.[2]

Showcasing coal to other nations

The plant is being used to promote "high-efficiency, low-emissions" or HELE technology to Australia as a "stop-gap" measure as it transitions away from traditional, dirtier methods of burning coal.[3] But "not only do HELE coal stations emit too much carbon, they cost too much and they're too unwieldy for a 21st century electricity system," said Olivia Kember, acting chief executive officer of the Climate Institute. "The business case just doesn't stack up, and that's why no power companies in Australia are interested in investing in HELE coal — they know it doesn't make sense."[3]
