Background

The proposed LNG terminal is a project of TISA (Termelétrica Itacoatiara SA), a subsidiary of Grupo Dislub Equador. The terminal would be located at Grupo Dislub Equador's existing port facility on the Amazon River in Itacoatiara, Amazonas state, Brazil. Shipments of LNG would be brought upriver by boat to the terminal. Plans call for a floating regasification and storage unit (FSRU) with a capacity of 14 million m3/day to supply natural gas via a 500-meter pipeline to the company's proposed 518 MW Itacoatiara power station.[1][2][3]

In 2018, TISA submitted an environmental impact report for the gas plant and terminal project and received its initial license from Amazonas state's environmental authority IPAAM (Instituto de Proteção Ambiental do Amazonas). The company reportedly plans to enter the project in Brazil's forthcoming national energy auctions.[2]

A July 2021 report from Brazil's energy research agency EPE continued to list the Itacoatiara Terminal as a key project under consideration, noting its strategic location near the Amazonas-Pará state border, and highlighting its potential to spur the use of natural gas to replace other more expensive and polluting fuels such as fuel oil and diesel.[3][4]

As of July 2023, no further development of the Itacoatiara Terminal has been reported for more than two years, so it is presumed to be shelved.
