Background

Bhushan Power and Steel Ltd (BPSL) signed an MoU with Jharkhand state government in September 2006 to set up a 3 mtpa steel plant and 900 MW power plant in Potka village, Jharkhand at a cost of INR 12,000 crores. Activists and local farmers and tribal communities opposed the project alleging violations in land acquisition. A public hearing in September 2012 ended abruptly as protests broke out. The project has been in limbo since.[1][2]

Jindal Steel and Power Limited had proposed a 6 mtpa integrated steel plant and 1320 MW power plant in Asanboni, Potka, Jharkhand at a cost of INR 22,000 crore. A majority of the villagers and landowners had favoured the project during the public hearing.[3]

Bhushan Power & Steel Ltd. was acquired by JSW Steel in September 2019.[4]

In 2021, OECD listed the project as one of the upcoming capacities with a targeted start year of 2030.[5] As of January 2025, there hasn't been any updates on the project. The project is assumed cancelled.
