JSW Steel Jharkhand steel plant, also known as JSW Steel Ranchi, is a steel plant in Ranchi, Sonahatu, Jharkhand, India that operates blast furnace (BF), basic oxygen furnace (BOF), and direct reduced iron (DRI) technology.
Location
The map below shows the approximate location of the plant in Ranchi, Sonahatu, Jharkhand, India:
- Location: Sonahatu, Ranchi, Jharkhand, India
- Coordinates (WGS 84): 23.188108, 85.715097 (approximate)
Background
The JSW Steel Jharkhand steel plant was proposed by the JSW Steel group in 2005.[1] JSW Steel will invest ₹ 35,000 crore into the project, which is estimated to create 30,000 jobs.[2] The plant will be fuelled by a 900MW captive power plant.[2] JSW Steel also envisioned setting up a township spread across over 3,800 acres in seven villages near the Sonahatu block in the Ranchi district for employees.[2] The first phase of the proposed plant is expected to install a crude steel capacity of 5 mtpa.[3][4]
In November 2005, JSW Steel signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the government of Jharkhand (GoJ) regarding the project.[1]
In 2008, after a site assessment and third-party feasibility report, the Government of Jharkhand approved the project.[1]
In 2014, a public hearing was conducted by the Jharkhand State Pollution Control Board (JSPCB).[1]
In March 2015, JSW applied for the grant of Environmental Clearance (EC) along with the final Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) report.[1]
In 2016, JSW Steel obtained the environmental clearance for a plant in Jharkhand.[2]
According to the OECD's 2020 steelmaking report, the JSW Steel Group is currently still in the "process of obtaining approvals and clearances necessary for the project."[5] Another source verifies that the project is still under discussion as of 2020; according to this source, the plant will be operational 2-3 years after construction begins.[6]
As of March 2021, land purchase and various approvals with regard to water, railway siding and environment were in process.[7]
No further updates on the project as of November 2024.
