Background
The Jalagam Vengala Rao II (JVR II) coal mine is a 5 million-tonnes-per-annum opencast mine, operated by Singareni Collieries Company Limited, a subsidiary of Coal India, in Khammam District, Telangana State, India.[5] The Jalagam Vengala Rao II opencast coal mine lies adjacent to and southwest of the JVR coal mine.[5] The mine's environment clearance was granted in March 2010 for a peak capacity of 5 Mtpa over a lease area of 1359.81 hectares.[6]

Project Expansion
In 2018, SCCL proposed a plan to increase JVR OC II's capacity from 5 to 10 million-tonnes-per-annum (Mtpa) by integrating the mine with the neighboring JVR OC I mine site whose coal reserves were depleted in 2021. According to SCCL, the mine merger would facilitate JVR OC II in "sequential/relay dumping and conserving the land requirement for overburden dump."[5] The JVR OC II Expansion Project also includes a proposal to establish a coal wash plant of 4 Mtpa within the project area.[5]
The proposed expansion includes 254.51 million tonnes of mineable coal reserves which would extend the mine's life by 28 years.[5] As of August 2022, the project is still pending approval.
