Financing

  • Source of financing: Companhia Riograndense de Mineração (CRM)

Background

Since its inception in the 1980s, this project has passed through the hands of numerous investors, including the state government agency Companhia Riograndense de Mineração (CRM), which provided US$70 million to fund its construction. As of late 2012, the project had been abandoned indefinitely, with construction halted, the plant's permit suspended due to financial problems, and adjacent land taken over by Jacuí's naval port.

The Rio Grande do Sul state government maintains that there are investors still interested in reviving the plant.[1] However, according to a January 2013 article published by G1 (Brazil's biggest news site), Marco Antônio de Costa Souza, an attorney for the plant's owners, estimates that it would cost an additional R$500 million to get the project up and running, and the mayor of Charqueadas, Davi Gilmar de Abreu Souza, maintains that chances of reviving the project are very slim, noting that his town has already expropriated part of the plant's property to build an industrial park.[2]
