Background
The Jagannath coal mine is operated by Mahanadi Coalfields Limited, a subsidiary of Coal India. It produces a maximum of 6 million tonnes per annum, on the Talcher coalfield in Angul, Odisha state, India.[10][11] The Jagannath mine is a part of the larger Talcher coalfield that produces 61.83 million tonne-per-annum for Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (a subsidiary of state-owned Coal India).[11]
In 2017, Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL) submitted a proposal to expand the mine's production from 6 Mtpa to 7.5 Mtpa, and also to expand the mining lease area from its current 430.736 hectares to 553.946 hectares.[12]
In late-2018, mining operations at Jagannath, and at all other mines in Talcher coalfields, temporarily halted due to protests by more than a dozen families who refused to vacate landS near Rakas village.[13] Police eventually detained protestors and completed evictions, leading operations to gradually restart in fall 2019. However, ongoing negotiations between MCL and Danara and Solada villages have delayed work on the Jagannath opencast expansion project.[13]
