Background
In 2007, Jai Balaji Industries announced its plan for setting up a 5 mtpa steel plant, a 3 mtpa cement plant anf 1,215 MW power plant in Purulia district of West Bengal at a cost of around INR 16,000 crores.[1] The project was expected to be developed in phases, with the first phase involving a capacity of 2 mtpa to go on stream in 3 years.[2] In 2009, the company altered its strategy for the first phase and decided to not make steel in the first phase, but begin coal mining and sponge iron production.[3] As of September 2017, the company was facing delays in land acquisition for the first phase.[4] According to the company's 2022-23 Annual report, the plant had not commenced commercial production yet.[5]
