Background on Mine

The Jamuna coal mines are an opencast and underground pair of mines, operated by South Eastern Coalfields Limited, a subsidiary of Coal India. When both locations were operating, they produced a combined 1.83 million-tonnes-per-annum (MTPA) of coal.

Jamuna OC

The Jamuna Opencast coal mine of 1.31 MTPA over a lease area of 1052.54 hectares (ha) received its environment clearance on 20 May 2005.[3] The project was closed after exhausting its capacity, as per the information provided by the Ministry of Coal in the Indian Parliament on 8 August 2018.[4] In 2020, the mine was listed as active, producing 0.15 million tonnes. However, as of 2022, it was included on a list of abandoned mines identified for ash filling.[5]

Jamuna UG

The Jamuna Underground coal mine of 0.516 MTPA over a lease area of 915 ha received its environment clearance on 18 May 2006.[6]
