Background on Mine

The Jhiria West coal mine will be operated by South Eastern Coalfields Limited, a subsidiary of Coal India. The mine has a designed capacity of 1.5 million-tonnes-per-annum on an area of 482.694 hectares. The project lies immediately west of old Rajnagar incline of Rajnagar leasehold area and is part of Sohagpur coalfields under the administrative control of Hasdeo area of SECL.[2]

The mine life is estimated at 12 years.[2]

According to SECL's 2019-2020 Annual Report, the Terms of Reference (ToR) has been granted for Jhiria West OC by India's Ministry of Environment, Forests & Climate Change (MoEF & CC).[3] However, as of August 2022, the EC is still pending.
