Background
In the morning of December 19, 1982, tank No. 8 of the Tacoa power station exploded after receiving some 110 to 115 thousands barrels of fuel oil from a tanker.[15] The first explosion immediately resulted in the deaths of two of the plant's workers who were assisting the unloading process.[16] Firefighters, volunteers, onlookers, and journalists immediately rushed to the scene. When the fire had been nearly contained, around midday, tank No. 9 exploded as a result of the heat generated by the first fire (boil-over).[17] The second explosion ignited approximately 16,000 metric tons of residual fuel oil[18] that consumed over 500 nearby buildings and cars.[17] The death toll of the "tragedy of Tacoa", as it is known, was somewhere around 160 people, and around 500 people were injured[18]. It is the worst power station accident in Venezuelan history.[16]
In November 2020, government officials visited the Josefa Joaquina Sánchez Bastidas power station, vowing to restore operations at the plant.[19] However, in October 2021, individuals were found removing high-voltage cables from the facility, leading to the death of one[20], and as of April 2022, the power plant was reportedly being dismantled and sold for scrap.[21] A fire broke out at the plant later the same month, adding to uncertainty about the plant's future.[22]
