KG Steel Dangjin steel plant, also known as KG Dongbu Steel Dangjin (formerly), Kage Dongbu Steel Dangjin, Asan Bay Works, Keiji Dongbu Steel Dangjin, is a steel plant in Dangjin, South Chungcheong, South Korea that operates electric arc furnace (EAF) technology.
Location
The map below shows the exact location of the plant in Dangjin, South Chungcheong, South Korea:
- Location: 1228, Bukbusaneop-ro, Songak-eup, Dangjin-si, Chungcheongnam-do, Republic of Korea
- Coordinates (WGS 84): 36.983721, 126.744755 (exact)
Background
The construction of the Dangjin factory was completed in 1999. The steel meltshop comprising two 160 ton electric arc furnaces (EAF) was inaugurated in July 2009.[1] Dongbu Steel went through a corporate workout program in 2015 and had been up for sale for five years until KG group acquired it in April 2019.[2] The company changed its name to KG Dongbu Co Ltd in March 2020 and to KG Steel Co Ltd in March 2022.[3]
In 2016, Pulse News of the Maekyung Media Group reported that equipment from the Dongbu Steel Dangjin steel plant would be sold off to Iran.[4] The attempt failed then, but its EAF units were sold to Liberty group for installation at its Romania-based Galati steelworks in November 2022.[5] As of February 2023, Liberty Steel studying the feasibility of relocating the equipment from South Korea to their Galati plant.[6] In February 2024, all of the Purchaser's rights and obligations were transferred to Liberty Primary Metals Australia Pty Limited, and the Purchaser holds an option related to the transfer of the hot rolling electric furnace facility, which may increase the sale price. The exercise date of the option is March 29, 2024.[7]
