Background
Kalinin Coal Mine is a coal mine in Horlivka, Donetsk Oblast, Ukraine. According to the Institute for War and Peace Reporting, most Donbas region mines were seized by Russians and pro-Russian rebels in late 2014 and many have endured electricity shortages and flooding ever since. Many are likely non-operational and on hiatus.[6]
It was part of the State Enterprise Donetsk Coal Energy Company, but from June 2019, it became part of Makeevugol State Enterprise - an entity held by the Ministry of Energy of the unrecognized Donetsk People's Republic.[7][8]
Fire broke out in the mine in August 2020 and it was partially flooded, although it was planned to restart mining operations.[9] Without further news on the mine's operations, the mine is regarded as mothballed.
