Background

The North Korean government began constructing the 300 MW coal-fired Kandong power station outside its capital, Pyongyang. The new power plant appeared to be an attempt to supplement the country's aging Pukchang power station. Satellite imagery suggested construction began in 2010-2011. The planned completion date was unknown.[1]

The time lapse feature of Google Earth shows little or no change to the partially built plant between October 2013 and December 2021, indicating that the project is on hold. Planet satellite images also showed no development from 2017 to December 2021. The project appears to be abandoned.
