Background

Both combined cycle units consist of gas turbines manufacture by General Electric Corporation (GE). In June 2023, GE stopped providing maintenance services to its gas turbines installed in Russia, including three power stations in Kazan. In practice, this means GE closed access from Russia to the turbine monitoring system. According to the media, it is evident that the supply of original parts, including components of the so-called "hot section," such as blades, will also be stopped, although as of now, no sanctions have been imposed by the European Union and the United States for such actions. The outcomes will affect not only GE turbines but also Alstom, which has been part of GE since 2015. The total installed capacity of generating units with imported turbines of different brands in Russia is estimated at 25 GW, and their share in electricity generation in Russia is 17%. GE's gas turbines account for about 5 GW, and generating units using the GE turbines for approximately 8 GW.[11]
