Big Sandy to close

On December 19, 2012, Kentucky Power said it would retire Big Sandy Plant units 1 and 2 in 2015. Unit 1 may be converted to natural gas. The power from Unit 2 will be obtained from AEP Ohio's Mitchell Plant.[1]

IGCC plans

Kentucky is one of the states that will be considered for construction of a future Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) power plant, a "clean coal" technology. AEP has indicated its desire to build one or more IGCC units of 600 megawatts each.[2]
