Background

Mining operations at the mine were stopped in 2000 and the assets of the mine were sold to Khakasrazrezugol LLC, and all employees were dismissed due to liquidation. In 2002 Khakasrazreguol ine went bankrupt.

Khakasskaya mine joined SUEK in 2003. It was owned and operated by SUEK-Khakassiya, a subsidiary of SUEK.

In March 2004 a new longwall face began to produce coal at the mine. In 2006 the mine produced 0.98 million tonnes of coal, in 2011 - 1.5 million tonnes.

In March 2015 the mine marked its 58th anniversary, having produced 40 million tonnes of coal in total since the start of operations, and still having 102 million tonnes of reserves.

The closing plans were already announced in 2015 as the mine was referred to as unprofitable, some employees were left ago. As of 2016, the mine was still operating but at less capacity.

The mine stopped production in August 2017 and according to a representative of SUEK, this was due to poor economics of the mining operations related to the specific coal types produced by the mine as well as issues with selling produced coal. According to SUEK's 2017 annual report, the mine was closed to "depletion of commercial efficient resources".
