Background

Kharanorsky coal mine (Харанорский разрез) is a surface mine in Zabaykalsky Krai, Russia. The mine is owned and operated by Razrez Kharanorsky JSC, a subsidiary of Siberian Coal Energy Company (SUEK).

The mines 2B & 3B, which produce the same amount, provide lignite to the Kharanorskaya power station and to the power stations of TGK-14.[10]

In its 2018 Annual report, SUEK stated that their main project in Zabaikalye region relates to increasing the capacity of the Kharanorsky mine to 4 Mt by 2019.[11] This has been achieved as the mine 4.17 million tonnes in 2020[12] and 4.475 million tonnes in 2021.[13] As of November 2022, the mine has produced 4 million tonnes and planned to extract 5 million tonnes in 2023.[14]

As per August 2024 news, the mine continues to break production records and has produced 2.9 million tonnes in the first half of 2024. A total of 5.5 million tonnes was the business plan for 2024 and the company will try to achieve 6 Mt production.

Expansion

As of August 2024, three major investment projects are underway, with a view to increase production to 7 Mtpa and then to 9Mtpa. The mine invests significant funds in the acquisition of new equipment - mining and transport equipment, excavators, dump trucks, bulldozers, graders. In addition, a large project has been created to reconstruct the railway system: the open pit has three stations, almost 60 kilometers of tracks, the repair of which will increase the transport capacity, which will have a positive effect on the extraction and transportation of coal. The company is affected by equipment supply issues as the business contacts with Japan and the EU countries have been interrupted due to sanctions and instead, Chinese and Belarussian equipment is being sought.[15]

The expansion is likely driven by the announcement of planned new coal units at Kharanorskaya power station.
