Background
Environment and social impacts
The pipeline "Vozey-Golovnye sooruzheniya" commissioned in 1975 and later integrated into the Kharyaga-Usa pipeline, burst in 1994, causing a massive oil spill.[4] The spill is estimated at two million barrels over 79 hectares with the depth varying from a few centimeters to a meter. The Kolva river was significantly damaged.[5] The pipeline has been extremely worn down, with multiple smaller accidents covered up with no consideration for the necessary replacement of the pipeline. The cause of the spill is said to be negligence.[5]
