Background
Kiepersol Coal Mine is an undeground mine in Mkhondo, Mpumalanga, South Africa.[5] Jindal Mining South Africa (Pty) Ltd., a subsidiary of India-based Jindal Steel and Power, owns and operates the Kiepersol mine. (Jindal acquired it in 2009.)[6] The mine, which employs approximately 800 people, including contractors, produces metallurgical coal for the domestic market and export markets through Richards Bay Coal Terminal.[5]
In 2017, environmental justice organization GroundWork raised environmental and human rights concerns regarding the mines disruption of local communities' quality of life and freedom of movement. [7]
In June 2018, Jindal Mining South Africa entered into voluntary business rescue; however, by November 2019, its operations were reported as stable.[8]
