Background
The plant is part of the four-power-plant complex in Kinyerezi, which falls under the national electricity company. The plants are the Kinyerezi I power station, Kinyerezi II power station, Kinyerezi III power station, and Kinyerezi IV power station.
In 2012, Tanzania signed a contract with three Chinese companies to start the construction of a 542-km pipeline leading from Mtwara to the country’s capital, Dar es Salaam to transport natural gas from the Mnazi Bay gas field. The project was financed by a Chinese loan and grants from the World Bank (USD 300 million) and the African Development Bank (USD 200 million). The pipeline and processing plant were part of the Government’s program to add 10000 MW of generation capacity by 2025, up from the 1500 MW in 2015. The aim is to reduce dependency on hydropower, representing 31% of Tanzania’s power generation and whose capacity has been affected by recurring droughts hitting the country.[4]
As of July 2022, the plant is considered canceled.
