CHP is an abbreviation for Combined Heat and Power. It is a technology that produces electricity and thermal energy at high efficiencies. Coal units track this information in the Captive Use section when known.

Background
The three-unit, 450-MW coal-fired plant is owned by T Plus Group, which is part of the Renova Group. The plant was previously part of TGC-5 and Volzhskaya TGC. TPlus is the successor Volzhskaya TGC, which consolidated TGC-5, TGC-6, TGC-9 and Orenburgskaya TGC in 2014. In 2015, at the shareholders meeting, it was decided to change the name of the combined company to T Plus.[7]
The plant’s three units were brought online between 1982 and 1986[8][9][10] The station was designed to use both coal and gas as fuel.[11] The station provides heat and power to the industry and residential sector of the city of Kirov.[11][12]
The plant produced 1,256 million kWh of electricity in 2020.[13]
Conversion to Gas
In late 2021 T Plus has reported its plan to fully convert the plant to gas by 2023.[14][15]
Reports from the regional Tariff Service stated that across BOTH Kirov-5 power station and Kirov-4 power station (which is fired by coal, gas and peat), in 2020 natural gas represented 89% of the fuel balance, coal was only 3% and peat was 8% (used in Kirov-4).[16] In 2021, gas represented 93%, coal only 0.42% and peat was 6% for the two plants.[17] 2023 plan included 2.4% for coal in the fuel balance.[17] Based on these updates, it appeared that the plant is already mostly gas-fired with minimal use of coal despite the fact that the Russian Ministry of Energy 2024-2029 energy program still lists coal and heavy fuel oil as types of fuel used by the station.[18]
