Background
Komsomolets Coal Mine (шахта Комсомолец) is an underground mine in Kemerovo Oblast, Russia.[7] The Komsomolets coal mine is owned and operated by SUEK Kuzbass JSC, a subsidiary of Siberian Coal Energy Company (SUEK).[7] in August 2023 the mine reached 90 years of its operating life.[8] The peculiarity of the Komsomolets mine is that it is the only mine of SUEK that uses skip lifting. This method of coal transportation requires particularly well-coordinated work of all sections and services.[9]
Annual production of the Komsomolets mine has been about 2.5 Mt, about 1.5 MT of which is exported.[10] Komsomolets mine has its own washing plant with annual capacity of 2.5 Mt per annum.[10] In 2019 the mine produced record 3.05 Mt, which was the best result in its 86-year history.[11] In the first 6 months of 2022, the mine produced 580 thousand tonnes of coal, which was 640 thousand tonnes less than in the same period in 2021.[12] 2022 production level is not available. As of April 2023, the mine produced 1 million tonnes since the beginning of the year.[13]
SUEK reported in its 2021 annual report that Komsomolets mine and Kirova Coal Mine are equipped with recovery systems that capture methane gas and use it to generate heat and electricity.[14]
The Federal Technical Supervisory Authority (Rostechnadzor) suspended the mine's operations several times in 2022 due to technical safety violations.[12]
