Background
Once built, the pipeline was used to transport gas from gas fields in the Krasnodar Krai to Serpukhov and then to Moscow and St. Petersburg. However, when new gas deposits were discovered in Siberia and the gas fields in the Krasnodar Krai were about to be exhausted, the pipeline was used to transport gas in the reverse direction. This feature had been included in the initial design of the pipeline.[6]
In June 2023, Gazprom announced a tender for liquidation of ending sections of both pipelines in the Moscow region.[7]
