Background
Owner Hunosa's website states that the 50 MW La Pereda power station has been generating electricity since 1995, burning a mix of coal from the nearby Pozo San Nicolás coal mine, along with wood chips and other waste fuel.[7][8]
Biomass plans
According to Europe Beyond Coal, a biomass conversion project is planned at the site (mix of up to 100% solid forest biomass – woody and residual – together with solid recovered fuel not exceeding 25% of the energy generated). The project was projected to begin construction in 2022.[9]
As of December 2021, the project was under the corresponding administrative permitting and EIA procedure, and had not been authorized yet.[10] However, the coal-fired power station may have already been deactivated.
In October 2022, Hunosa announced that the power station's biomass conversion was expected to be complete in 2024.[11]
As of February 2023, two companies were reportedly competing for rights to convert the plant to run on biomass. Construction was expected to begin in fall 2023 and take approximately 21 months, implying a 2025 start-up date for biomass-fired operations.[12]
In May 2023, following a meeting with concerned community members, a pair of local politicians announced their strong opposition to the plant's alleged plans to incinerate solid municipal waste in addition to forest biomass.[13]
