Background
In 2022, New Energy Fortress (NEF) and Pemex finalized an agreement "to complete the development of the Lakach deepwater natural gas field, one of the largest non-associated gas fields in the Gulf of Mexico."[9] OffshoreTechnology reported that "Final investment decision (FID) of the project was approved in 2022."[10] But, in November of 2023, the project was "scrapped" by NEF and Pemex[11] "because the parties could not come to an agreement on terms including pricing."[12] The project had previously been shelved due to cost concerns. Reserve estimates have also been questioned.[12]
However, in early 2024, PEMEX and "billionaire investor Carlos Slim’s team [were] discussing ways to revive development of the Lakach field development project in the deepwater Gulf of Mexico."[12]
