Laramie County pilot plant
A new pilot plant was proposed for Laramie County to research advanced coal gasification technologies using coal from the Powder River Basin. The plant, which was estimated to cost $100 million, was to be a joint venture between General Electric Co. and the state of Wyoming.[1] GE and the University of Wyoming signed a letter of intent in February 2008, which was approved by Governor Dave Freudenthal.[2]
On May 8, 2009, the University of Wyoming Board of Trustees unanimously approved the plant's location in Cheyenne. Eleven public and private organizations around the state had submitted proposals for fifteen sites in their efforts to land the facility.[1]
The plant was expected to process 15 to 25 tons of coal per day at its peak.[1]
In September, the Sierra Club reported that this proposed 180 MW plant in Michigan had still not submitted an air permit application, and Sierra concluded that the project had been abandoned.[3]
