Background

Lefa Coal Mine is a proposed underground mine near Sasolburg, in Free State Province, South Africa.[2] The proposed Lefa Colliery mining project will be located on various farms within the Metsimaholo local municipality, and falls within several catchments within the Upper Vaal Water Management Area.[2]

The mine has very little planned infrastructure as the mined coal will be hauled to the Lethabo Power station, pending a contract to be reached.[2] The South African private business, Ergosat, is currently the prospecting holder of the area and applied for a mining right in 2020. Although the mining right covers an area 3,180 hectares in size, the actual mine site will be undertaken on a smaller area.[2]

Coal will be mined at 567 tonnes per hour, or about 3 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa).[2] A low-quality thermal coal will be produced from the different coal seams that will be mined.[2]
