Background
There are plans to extract about 1.8 million tonnes of brown coal from the Lelchitsy deposit in Gomel Oblast, Belarus. In addition to the coal pit, there are plans for a 460 MW thermal power station there. The brown coal can be used either as a power-plant fuel or as a raw material for thermo-chemical processing and production of synthetic gas and petrol.[1]
In May 2012 it was announced that unnamed Chinese investors were interested in participating in the development of the Lelchitsy brown coal deposits and a 400 MW coal power plant. Prime Minister of Belarus Mikhail Myasnikovich reportedly discussed with them preparation of a project feasibility study, and said the construction of the cogeneration plant will be possible only if it is economically viable.[2]
However, as of March 2016 there have been no news since the May 2012 announcement, and the project appears to be abandoned. As of December 2022 and December 2024, there was no news on the project.
