Background

Liberty FSRU was a proposed LNG terminal in New Jersey, United States. New Jersey Governor Chris Christie vetoed the proposal in 2011, citing risks to New Jersey's shoreline, tourism, and fishing and shellfish industries.

Liberty Natural Gas withdrew its applications to build the import terminal in 2012, saying they did so to avoid confusion when filing permits for a "substantially revised" project. Liberty Natural Gas said they would refile at a later date. In July 2013, Liberty Natural Gas revamped the project as the Port Ambrose LNG facility.

Opposition

In October 2014, around 200 protesters concerned about potential environmental impacts of the Port Ambrose LNG facility gathered on the Long Beach boardwalk to oppose fracking and the planned natural gas terminal 19 miles offshore. Critics also said the proposed import terminal poses a safety risk, because it would be exposed to powerful storms.
